Rafael Coronel

Rafael Coronel, painter

Rafael Coronel was born in Zacatecas, Mexico (1931- 2019).

He first pursued his studies at the National Institute of Fine Arts, and then at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking (“La Esmeralda”). His work was distinguished among the artwork of young painters of his generation.


His first individual exhibition was presented in 1956, at the Arte Mexicano Gallery, one of the most important venues at the time in Mexico. By 1959, the National Institute of Fine arts presented a large number of his works at the Palace of Fine Arts. He traveled and exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the United States.

Coronel presented his artwork in solo exhibitions in important galleries and museums such as the Biennial of San Pablo, Brazil; Sforzesco Castello in Milan, Italy; Royal Museum of Art in Brussels, Belgium; Museum of Modern Art in New York; Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico; and Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City.
